Blog Profiles: Running & Fitness Blogs
Welcome to Blog Profiles! Each week, PR Newswire media relations manager Christine Cube selects an industry or subject and a handful of sites that do a good job with promoting, contributing, and blogging about the space. It’s race season.
Today, I’m sending a big shout out to the Boston Marathon runners, and I’m wishing each and every one a fantastic and safe race.
I’ve been running for years, and I faithfully sign up annually for Washington, DC area races. I recently ran my favorite 10-miler – the George Washington Parkway Classic. I’ve probably run it almost a dozen times, and it never gets old. It’s a beautiful race that starts at the first president’s Mount Vernon Estate and heads into Old Town Alexandria.
So this week, I’m inspired by running and fitness, and I’ve found some great blogs to suit.
The Hungry Runner Girl is written by Janae Jacobs, who began running at the age of 12.
“I didn’t start getting into racing until 2010 when I ran my first marathon, the Salt Lake Marathon, and finished as the fifth woman overall,” Jacobs says, on her blog. She was instantly hooked.
I like The Hungry Runner Girl because it’s got great content. Jacobs offers race recaps, information on her running gear, and advice like 6 Tips for Running Resiliency. In this post, she talks about learning from training mistakes and injuries, focusing on what you can do, not giving up, and stopping with the perfectionism – all great things to keep in mind when you’re training and/or exercising.
I also really enjoyed eat those hills for breakfast (or lunch or dinner if you are an afternoon/night runner). (Incidentally, I’m not particularly good at hills, and Jacobs’s post was a good reminder on effectively tackling them.)

Bird is the Word is the blog of Seattle running apparel company Oiselle.
This is a cool site. It includes interesting pieces like this Q&A with runner Jessica Graham, who’s running the Boston Marathon this year. Graham even discussed her fascinating fuel strategy: “3 hours before the race: bagel, peanut butter, banana, coffee, Nuun. Sport beans or some chomps in the hour before the race. This training cycle I am all about the Salted Caramel Gu: I usually take them at mile 8,15, and 20 in a marathon.”
Oiselle also featured some of its 20+ ambassadors who are taking on the marathon in Who’s Running Boston?
“Each gal has trained for this memorable journey they are about to embark on and now it’s our turn to follow and fan girl from start to finish,” the blog says.

Fitness blog Mark’s Daily Apple covers “primal living in the modern world.” It’s written and managed by author Mark Sisson, a former runner and triathlete whose health philosophy is pretty simple. Here’s a bit of it:
“In a nutshell: – fresh, organic, unprocessed food – no junk! – daily activity – whether it’s the gym or a walk along the beach, it all counts – plenty of quality sleep – plenty of water, no soda or sweetened drinks – antioxidants galore – the key to limiting stress – a good fish-oil supplement”
An interesting post Sisson wrote recently is 4 Foods That Have Surprising Medicinal Benefits. I also happen to like his ‘Dear Mark’ series, including this post on vegetable powders, pro/prebiotic timing and routine eating.

Grit By Brit is a full package of wellness and exercise.
Fitness instructor and blogger Brit Rettig features sections on nutrition, abs and core, arms, back, cardio, legs, total body sculpt, cleanses, detox plans, weight loss, and four-week challenges.
I appreciate this blog because of Rettig’s passion for fitness. Her post, Good Things Come to Those Who Sweat also features a 20-minute calorie blaster with specifics on incline and time duration of walking, jogging, and sprints. That’s just awesome.
I also enjoyed guest post nutritional bang for your buck: tips for healthy grocery shopping on a budget. (Sardines! I always forget about that protein. OK, that has to go back into my diet.)

Yoga Flavored Life is a good reminder of the mental wellness that goes hand-in-hand with keeping healthy and fit. The blog is led by editor Charlotte Bradley.
“Yoga is not just for gurus or the very flexible,” the blog says. “Anyone can practice yoga and benefit by building a healthy body and mind. This site is dedicated to helping everyday people explore yoga and how it fits into their lives.”
A post that really resonated with me is Four Simple Steps: The Way of Mindfulness Meditation. The first two steps – stopping and sitting – are things I struggle with all the time. I also liked Yoga Flavored Life’s post, Launch into Spring.
