The CARE Package Turns 70: Poll Finds Americans Love ‘CARE Packages,’ Don’t Know Roots of Phrase
A new online survey conducted by Harris Poll for the humanitarian organization CARE reveals that while 84% of Americans have heard of the term “care package” and 60% have either sent or received one, only 13% know where the phrase originated. Founded to deliver those original CARE Packages of food and supplies to families clinging to survival in Europe after World War II, CARE commissioned the poll of more than 2,100 American adults in March to commemorate the 70th anniversary of those first CARE Packages. On May 11, 1946, the original shipment of cardboard boxes were distributed in Le Havre, France, the first of more than 100 million CARE Packages that Americans sent to people in need around the world. See the full release to see more about the history of the CARE Package.

CDC: 1 in 3 Antibiotic Prescriptions Unnecessary
At least 30% of antibiotics prescribed in the U.S. are unnecessary, according to new data published May 3 in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) by the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC), in collaboration with Pew Charitable Trusts and other public health and medical experts. The study analyzed antibiotic use in doctors’ offices and emergency departments throughout the United States. CDC researchers found that most of these unnecessary antibiotics are prescribed for respiratory conditions caused by viruses – including common colds, viral sore throats, bronchitis, and sinus and ear infections – which do not respond to antibiotics. The media love to cover police conduct, sometimes looking at cops as our saviors and other times as our oppressors. New Harris Poll data shed light on how Americans feel about the police in their communities, both their successes and their shortcomings. Nearly 9 in 10 adults (88%) say most police officers have a positive impact on the communities where they work, including 45% who strongly agree; at the same time, however, many adults believe police misconduct happens in their community against various minorities. See the full release to see more about the survey.
