2016 Scripps National Spelling Bee Declares Co-Champions
Jairam Hathwar (JAY-rahm HATH-wahr), a 13-year-old speller from Painted Post, N.Y., and Nihar Janga (nee-HAHR jenga), an 11-year-old speller from Austin, Texas, are co-champions of the 2016 Scripps National Spelling Bee, presented by Kindle. It was a marathon finish for these two outstanding competitors. In the 39th round, Hathwar correctly spelled “Feldenkrais,” a medical term used for a system of aided body movements intended to increase bodily awareness and ease tension. Janga immediately followed by spelling “gesellschaft,” which means a rationally developed mechanistic type of social relationship characterized by impersonally contracted associations between persons. With these correct spellings, the Scripps National Spelling Bee declared co-champions for the third year in a row. See the full release to learn more about the champion spellers.

General Mills is collaborating with health officials to investigate an ongoing, multistate outbreak of E. coli O121 that may be potentially linked to Gold Medal flour, Wondra flour, and Signature Kitchens flour (sold in Safeway, Albertsons, Jewel, Shaws, Vons, United, Randalls, and Acme.) Out of an abundance of caution, a voluntary recall is being made. To date, E. coli O121 has not been found in any General Mills flour products or in the flour manufacturing facility and the company has not been contacted directly by any consumer reporting confirmed illnesses related to these products. See the full release to see more about the recall.

Twitter Introduces Comment Moderation Tools in Periscope Broadcasts
Twitter introduced on May 31 a new tool to combat spam and abuse in Periscope broadcasts. Periscope allows anyone to broadcast live to a global audience and enables viewers to interact in real time. Designed to be transparent, live, and community-led, the new reporting tool gives people watching the broadcast the ability to report comments they find inappropriate as they appear on the screen. A small group of randomly selected live viewers will then vote on whether they agree with the reporter’s assessment. Those found to be sending spammy or abusive comments will be temporarily disabled from commenting within the broadcast. See the full release to see more about the new tools.
