Blog Profiles: Men’s Etiquette Blogs

If you want to have a good laugh, flip through an old book on etiquette for men and ladies.

While much of it is antiquated and even ironic — especially given the times we are in — there are some good old-fashioned manners that never go out of style.

Examples: dressing appropriately for the occasion and holding the door open for someone else.

Here are four blogs bringing the best of gentlemanly etiquette of the past to the everyman of the 21st century.

1. Gentleman’s Journal

The Gentleman’s Journal is a luxury lifestyle magazine based out of London.

It covers the latest in style and grooming, business, lifestyle, culture, and more — “to ensure you become the best gentleman.”

The site has an entire section dedicated to providing men with the latest etiquette dos and don’ts.

Why a gentleman shouldn’t fear making mistakes includes great reminders for both men and ladies.  The gentleman’s guide to writing emails touches on the art and etiquette of written communication.

2. The Art of Manliness

The Art of Manliness was founded by Brett McKay in 2008. When things unexpectedly took off, he brought on his wife, Kate, to help.

Together, they run the blog from its headquarters in Tulsa, Okla.

“We seek to uncover how to live with grandpa’s swagger, virtue, and know-how in the present age by wedding the best of the past to the best of the present,” it says on the site.

The Importance of Good Manners challenges the notion that being polite means being weak. I also recommend checking out the podcast episode Why Are 7 Million Men Missing From the Workforce? As focus shifts intensely to what’s happening to women in the workforce, this post discusses another crisis — but around men.

3. The Quintessential Mind

The Quintessential Mind is a blog by Andrian. He started the blog in 2014 in an effort to discover ways to optimize every aspect of his life.

“Think of [the posts] as pieces of a puzzle that endeavor to come together and help you refine your mindset, increase your self-awareness and help you make sense of the world around you,” writes Andrian.

Developing Self-Awareness – The 5 Stages of Awareness Mastery teaches the importance and process of developing extreme self-awareness. I also enjoyed this post on 5 Critical Mental Models to Add to Your Cognitive Repertoire.

4. The Distilled Man 

Kyle Ingham is founder of The Distilled Man.

His blog and podcast are dedicated to giving guys a second chance to discover lost “gentlemanly” arts — like how to change a tire, tie a tie, or give a toast.

5 classic things that are still better the old-fashioned way is a must-read.

I also recommend listening to this podcast episode with Lizzy Post, the great-great-granddaughter of famous etiquette expert Emily Post. Post and Ingham discuss chivalry in the 21st century and the intersection between technology and etiquette, among other topics.
