Upcoming November Events for Journalists, Bloggers, and Freelancers
Welcome to Blogger Events, a monthly column of what’s happening in the blog world. If you have an event you’d like featured, reach out to the Beyond Bylines team via Twitter at @BeyondBylines.
It’s hard to believe it’s already November. As some of you (hopefully) get some more free time or lighter editorial calendars in the last months of the year, one of these unique events can be a great way to utilize that time.
Let’s jump in.
Anytime: Pathways to Philanthropy: Funding Local Journalism
Check out this recording of Current’s latest “Local that Works” webinar. Speakers include Frank Mungeam, chief innovation officer of the Local Media Association, and Larry Lee, CEO of the Sacramento Observer.
Anytime: Content Analysis in the Newsroom
This webinar was hosted by Reframe, an initiative of Resolve Philly that aims to help journalists more fairly and accurately report on misrepresented and underrepresented communities. Reframe editor Aubrey Nagle and Erik Slavin, of Stars and Stripes, discuss how content analysis and the lessons learned about framing, thematic coverage, and context can be applied in any newsroom.
Multiple Dates: Freelancing with Tim
Another month full of great sessions from Tim Herrerra, author and former editor of The New York Times’s Smarter Living. The November events include:
- Nov. 7: How to get into and succeed at copywriting
- Nov. 7: How to write better personal essays
- Nov. 10: How to get into and write better cultural criticism
- Nov. 17: Pitch perfect: everything to know about pitching stories
Multiple Dates: Pinners Conference & Expo
These events are perfect for all the crafters, DIYers, food bloggers, beauty bloggers, and other creatives. November will feature two separate Pinners events: Salt Lake City (Nov. 5-6) and Scottsdale (Nov. 12-13). VIP ticket holders will get access to the influencer party/networking event, plus a swag bag full of great items.
Multiple Dates: Understanding Misinformation and How to Talk to People Who Believe It
This free webinar series is hosted by the News Literacy Project. While it’s targeted to older adults, the lessons on fact-checking (Nov. 3) and having productive conversations (Nov. 17) can offer useful tips to help journalists effectively and compassionately communicate with readers.
Nov. 1-4: Web Summit | Lisbon
Dubbed “the world’s premier tech conference,” Web Summit brings together the founders and CEOs of tech companies, fast-growing startups, policymakers, and heads of state to ask a simple question: Where to next? The lineup of speakers includes some of the biggest names from companies like Reddit, Black Lives Matter, Spotify, Microsoft, and more. Some of the media- and content-focused sessions include “Setting new news metrics,” “Reporting across borders,” and “At the crossroad of TV and social media.”
Nov. 1-5: Global Investigative Journalism Conference
Originally planned as an in-person event in Syndey, Australia, GIJC21 will instead be virtual. It will feature panels and workshops on the latest investigative techniques, data analysis, online research, cross-border collaboration, and more by the best journalists in the field. The virtual conference will also provide regional programs and language translations.
Nov. 2-4: Affiliate Summit West
“Imagine a place where advertisers and publishers of all sizes and types come together, to share knowledge and build partnerships so that together they can grow their businesses online…” That’s what attendees will find at Afilliate Summit West, taking place in Las Vegas. Tracks include Content & Commerce, Advertisers, and Innovation & Tech. The event will welcome publishers of all sizes, from mass media to bloggers.
Nov. 3-5: Lenfest News Philanthropy Summit
This inaugural summit is free to attend and open to anyone working in a nonprofit or for-profit news org. The panels, workshops, and networking events will cover topics that impact news organizations and their fundraising efforts. Topics will include grant writing, why local news matters, how to use data for fundraising, ethical storytelling, and more. One of the speaker highlights is sure to be the fireside chat with Stewart Bainum Jr., the Maryland businessman supporting local news in Baltimore.

Nov. 11: Social Media Bliss: How You Can Engage With Meaning and Without Losing Your Mind
This webinar will be hosted by Writer’s Digest University and is ideal for writers looking to build a network and audience on social media, and learn how to use the platforms effectively. The session will be led by Jane Friedman, an award-winning blogger and former publisher of Writer’s Digest.
