Forecasts for Summer 2022 Travel & the Economy | This Week on PR Newswire
Memorial Day marked the start of summer travel. Here are some of the most newsworthy releases on trends and opportunities for summer vacations recently posted on PR Newswire for Journalists.
Americans Are Budgeting More Toward Vacations and Prioritizing ‘Nearcations’ Due to Inflation, According to New Survey Results
With Americans searching for affordable travel alternatives this summer in the wake of inflation, new research shows “nearcations” and vehicle rentals may be the way to go — especially for those who are scaling back on vacation plans to stay closer to home and setting up a vacation budget in the wake of inflation and rising costs.
“While other vacation types have seen dramatic rises in cost over the past year in line with inflation, our average RV rental trip price has only gone up $5 over last year, representing a .28% increase,” said Jeff Cavins, co-founder and CEO of Outdoorsy, the leading global RV rental and outdoor travel marketplace. “Compare this to a 40% increase in hotel prices YoY, and you can see why we believe road trips are more insulated from inflation and also still a very affordable vacation option for those looking to keep their summer vacation plans intact.”
Travelers Want High-Tech, Low-Touch Hotel Stays Shows New Oracle Survey
A new study by Oracle Hospitality and Skift shows that 95% of people plan to travel in the next six months – with 29% taking an epic ‘revenge travel’ trip – however, many want to eliminate the ‘touch’ from the high-touch industry they once knew. Nearly three-quarters (73%) of travelers want to use their mobile device to manage their hotel experience, including checking in and out, paying, ordering food, and more. This is good news for hoteliers looking to tech to manage through the staffing shortage without hurting guest engagement and service.
Disneyland Resort Offers Spectacular Summer Fun with Return of ‘Fantasmic!,’ ‘Tale of the Lion King’ and More
This summer, Disneyland Resort is the ideal place for family and friends to create lasting memories, enjoy exciting entertainment and delight in splendid dining together. On May 28, Disneyland Park welcomed home “Fantasmic!” to the Rivers of America and presented a new staging of “Tale of the Lion King” at the Fantasyland Theatre.
Guests can also look forward to ongoing celebrations and limited-time experiences that will make this a sensational summer to remember, including new Celebrate Soulfully offerings and live music that honors Black culture and heritage during Black Music Month in June.
Deloitte: Leisure Travel to Take Off This Summer
Safety perceptions related to travel and social activities are at their highest point since the pandemic began, prompting many Americans to plan summer trips. However, amid renewed optimism for leisure travel, financial concerns and higher prices weigh on travelers. Deloitte’s new report, “Getting Back to Getaways: 2022 Deloitte Summer Travel Survey,” examines the trends and preferences that will guide leisure trips this season.
Among the findings:
- Six in 10 Americans will travel this summer, an increase from last year when 5 in 10 Americans planned the same.
- Travelers will take an average of two trips this summer with most (83%) planning to stay in hotels and/or rentals. Half (51%) plan to fly, while slightly more plan to take road trips (57%). Only 7% plan to take a cruise.
- More than one-quarter (28%) of travelers plan to spend significantly more this summer over their 2019 travel budgets for marquee trips, due to higher prices as well as accumulated savings. Meanwhile, 15% plan to spend significantly less; half of those travelers cite financial concerns.

Global, Domestic Impediments Will Slow Down Economy, but No Recession Yet
In March, the UCLA Anderson Forecast cited the uncertainties facing the U.S. and California economies. Seemingly, just as the economy was returning to normal as the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic began to abate, the Russian invasion of Ukraine destabilized global economic conditions. In the UCLA Anderson Forecast’s June reports for the nation and the state, the effects of a number of economic impediments — including the Russia-Ukraine war, COVID lockdowns in China, supply chain constraints and inflation — continue to affect the U.S. and California economies. And while there is no recession forecast in the June report, economic slowdowns in California and across the U.S. are expected.
